Is Cycling Good Or Bad For Your Knees?

Video Transcript:

Attention mountain bikers, road cyclists, and anyone who enjoys two wheeled transportation…..have you ever wondered if riding a bike is good or bad for your knees? Well, a recent study published in Medicine & Science In Sports & Exercise checked it out, and the results are pretty cool!

Researchers wanted to see if people who rode bikes had better knees, especially when it comes to knee osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis. They looked at a bunch of people, over 2,600 to be exact, and asked them about their biking habits throughout their lives—from when they were teenagers all the way to age 50 and beyond.

Here’s what they found: People who spent time biking were less likely to have knee pain and arthritis. And it wasn’t just a small difference—those who biked had up to a 21% lower chance of having knee pain and about a 30% lower chance of having arthritis compared to those who didn’t bike. Plus, the more stages of life they biked during, the healthier their knees were!

So, if you’re already riding your bike, keep at it! And if you’re not, it might be a great time to start. Not only is biking fun, but it could also help keep your knees strong and healthy for the long run.
