Can Calcium Help Lower Blood Pressure? Here's What a New Study Found

When most people think about calcium, they think about strong bones.

But calcium does much more than support your skeleton.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with nutrition research is assuming that if a supplement helps one specific group, it will benefit everyone.

That's not what this study showed.

The participants were postmenopausal women with both hypertension and hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels). The improvements in blood pressure were observed in women who successfully restored their calcium levels to normal—not in a general population of healthy adults.

For people who already consume enough calcium and have normal blood calcium levels, taking extra calcium has not consistently been shown to lower blood pressure.

Food First: The Best Way to Meet Your Calcium Needs

For most people, the best strategy is to meet calcium needs through a balanced diet.

Excellent calcium-rich foods include:

  • Milk
  • Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Cheese
  • Calcium-fortified plant milks
  • Sardines (with bones)
  • Canned salmon (with bones)
  • Tofu made with calcium sulfate
  • Kale
  • Bok choy
  • Collard greens

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for calcium is:

  • Women 19–50: 1,000 mg/day
  • Women 51 and older: 1,200 mg/day
  • Men 19–70: 1,000 mg/day
  • Men over 70: 1,200 mg/day

If you regularly fall short of these targets—or have been diagnosed with calcium deficiency—your healthcare provider may recommend supplementation.

Don't Forget Vitamin D

Calcium and vitamin D work together.

Without enough vitamin D, your body absorbs significantly less calcium from the foods you eat.

That's why many healthcare professionals recommend evaluating both nutrients together, especially in older adults.

If you're deficient in vitamin D, correcting that deficiency may improve calcium absorption and help maintain healthy bones.

More Isn't Always Better

Reduce Excess Sodium

Many people consume significantly more sodium than recommended. Reducing intake while increasing potassium-rich foods may help support healthy blood pressure.

Sleep and Manage Stress

Poor sleep and chronic stress can both contribute to elevated blood pressure over time.

The Bottom Line

This new clinical study provides an important reminder that context matters.

Researchers did not find that calcium supplements are a universal treatment for high blood pressure.

Instead, they found that postmenopausal women with hypertension who successfully corrected low blood calcium levels experienced better blood pressure control than women whose calcium levels remained low.

That's an encouraging finding for women with documented calcium deficiency—but it doesn't support taking calcium supplements "just in case."

The best approach is to:
